The story of GGH

It’s a conversation we all have in the clubhouse. “Where is your favourite course? Which is your favourite hole?” But it just so happened that this conversation was at Wentworth between broadcaster Chris Hollins and former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley — a chance meeting that sparked the idea for an unforgettable golfing journey.

What followed was Paul’s toughest challenge yet: compiling his definitive list of Golf’s Greatest Holes. From deeply personal choices, including the iconic hole at Luttrellstown Castle where Paul was married, to legendary fairways found on every golfer’s bucket list, each episode blends emotion, history and world-class golf. Together, Chris and Paul travel to extraordinary destinations and tackle some of the remarkable holes Paul has always dreamed of playing.

So, he started plotting this golfing expedition and they had anywhere in the world to begin their journey but just like his career he wanted to start in the island of Ireland. And what a journey it turned out to be. From the most northern spot of the island of Ireland, Donegal, south to Kinsale, as far west as Belmullet and East as Downpatrick.

Following the success of Series 1, the pair headed to Paul's "home from home" in mainland Europe, Portugal for Series 2. Each episode features holes selected by Paul for their framing, architecture, and natural beauty. From the rugged terrain of Porto in the north to the sun-drenched coastal playground of the Algarve, Golf's Greatest Holes offers an immersive experience of Portugal’s broad variety of championship-quality golf courses.

Series 3 is an Open special series featuring the stunning Royal Portrush featuring Darren Clarke and actor James Nesbitt. The series takes viewers on a breathtaking tour of one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic golf courses, showcasing legendary holes that have been part of Major Championships and the European Tour.

Series 4 of Golf’s Greatest Holes takes Paul McGinley and Chris Hollins to the spiritual home of golf — Scotland.

Set against some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world, the series explores Scotland’s iconic links courses, legendary fairways and hidden gems, uncovering the stories, history and unforgettable holes that have defined the game for generations. From dramatic coastlines and historic clubs to the challenges of battling the elements, Paul and Chris experience golf at its purest and most authentic.

Blending world-class golf, stunning travel and genuine camaraderie, Series 4 offers viewers a front-row seat to the magic of Scottish golf — playing the holes every golfer dreams of conquering while discovering why Scotland remains the ultimate bucket-list destination for the sport.

“I’m so pleased Chris and I had that chat a few years ago. I got to go back to some of the courses that are very special to me, but I also occasionally got visit some places I had always wanted to play. And boy, were they incredible! We have had a lot of fun making these series and we hope you enjoy watching them too.”
